Hélio António was born and raised on Europe’s West Coast, Portugal. Being a native of Nazaré, he grew up witnessing the extraordinary beauty of Praia do Norte and began capturing images along Portugal’s silver coast. He graduated in psychology in 2004 and served in the army for seven years, after which he returned to his hometown, Nazaré . He’s been attracted to the ocean since a very young age, and once he started surfing, he got obsessed with waves. Nowadays, his goal is to create images that carry emotion and make people want to be near the sea.

Hélio won the Mercedes Benz Nazaré Winter Session Awards 2024 (wave photography), and the first edition of the Praia do Norte Photography Awards.
He's worked with world-renowned brands like HBO, Red Bull, Monster Energy, Porsche, and Mercedes Benz, and his images have been published by National Geographic, Esquire, Gestalten, Yeti, Rizzoli, and D’ORO Collection.

He's been a regular contributor to Surfline since 2015. His work has been published in the most important surf media, such as Surfer, Surfer's Journal, Tracks, Stab, Carve, Wavelength, and VERT. He's a co-author of the book Salitre, the only surf publication in Portugal, currently in its third volume. In 2024, Helio was named Photographer of the Year at the Julio Cesar Andrino Gala.
